How to review a freelancer portfolio

Look beyond polished thumbnails to find relevant process, constraints and evidence of ownership.

Find comparable constraints

Relevance is more valuable than surface similarity. Look for work with comparable audiences, channels, technical limits or operational scale.

Ask what they actually did

Portfolio work is often collaborative. Ask which decisions and deliverables belonged to the candidate, what changed during the project and what they would improve now.

  • Their exact role
  • Inputs supplied by others
  • Constraints and trade-offs
  • Final delivered output rather than only mockups
