How to hire a developer without being technical

Use outcomes, acceptance criteria, staged delivery and independent ownership to reduce technical risk.

You do not need to prescribe the code

Your job is to make the user problem, constraints and acceptance checks clear. Ask candidates to explain their recommendation in plain language and identify trade-offs.

Create reviewable stages

Small demonstrations reveal misunderstandings earlier than one final handover.

  • Approve requirements and key journeys
  • Review a prototype or technical proof
  • Use a staging environment
  • Keep accounts and repositories in business ownership
  • Test against written acceptance criteria
